Dilmar’s Doug Sackett Appointed to Auburn University Tribology Advisory Board

Oct 15, 2026

Dilmar Oil Company is proud to announce that Doug Sackett, CLS, MLT, Senior Technical Advisor, has been appointed to Auburn University's Tribology Minor Industrial Advisory Board.

With more than 25 years of experience in the lubrication industry, Doug brings extensive knowledge of industrial lubricants, oil analysis, filtration, and equipment reliability to the role.

His appointment connects the practical challenges of industrial maintenance with the education of future engineers and lubrication professionals.

What Is Tribology, and Why Does It Matter?

Tribology is the science of friction, wear, and lubrication. It may not be a familiar term outside engineering and maintenance departments, but its principles are at work anywhere machinery operates.

In manufacturing plants, power generation facilities, and heavy equipment operations, proper lubrication helps protect critical components, control wear, and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

Choosing the right industrial lubricant is only part of the equation. Contamination, improper handling, water intrusion, and inadequate oil sampling practices can affect lubricant performance and equipment reliability.

Understanding these factors helps maintenance teams make better decisions about lubricant selection, oil analysis, filtration, and preventive maintenance.

Bringing Industrial Lubrication Experience to Auburn

Doug's background includes lubricant selection, oil sampling, oil reclamation, filtration, vacuum dehydration, and the development of lubrication programs for industrial applications.

As Dilmar's Senior Technical Advisor, he helps customers address lubrication challenges and understand how lubricant condition affects equipment performance.

His experience also extends beyond the field. Doug received the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) Raymond L. Thibault Excellence in Education Award in 2024, recognizing his contributions to practical education in tribology and lubrication engineering.

His appointment to Auburn's Industrial Advisory Board provides another opportunity to connect industry knowledge with engineering education.

Supporting the Next Generation of Lubrication Professionals

Auburn University's Tribology Minor introduces engineering students to the science of friction, wear, and lubrication, preparing them to apply these principles in industrial and technical careers.

The Industrial Advisory Board connects the program with professionals who understand the challenges faced by today's maintenance and reliability teams.

For Dilmar, Doug's involvement reflects something we've long believed: supplying the oil is only part of our job.

Helping customers understand lubricant performance, recognize contamination problems, and make informed maintenance decisions is just as important.

That knowledge becomes even more valuable when it's shared with the people who will design, operate, and maintain tomorrow's equipment.

Auburn Tribology Symposium | November 17, 2026

Auburn University will host its 14th Tribology Minor Symposium on November 17, 2026.

The symposium brings together students, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss tribology, lubrication science, and developments affecting equipment performance and reliability.

Attendees will have opportunities to learn about university research, connect with students, and network with professionals in the lubrication industry.
